The name Elguea comes from
the family that possessed the largest number of lands in
the region.
The accidental discovery of the medicinal properties of
its waters dates back to the middle of the XIX century when
one of the family slaves was freed so he would not contaminate
the whole personnel with a rare skin disease. After a while,
he was discovered completely healed for having used the
miraculous stream of hot waters. Thereafter, was constructed
a small hotel bearing the family name.
The patriotic history of Santa Clara goes back to Cuba's
independence war. In the capital of Santa Clara was buried
Ernesto Che Guevara, the hero who liberated the city from
the Batista tyranny. A visit to the Che's mausoleum is of
the utmost interest and importance. The Loma del Capiro
where the heroic warrior set up his headquarters and the
Tren Blindado Museum are also sites worth of interest.
